This should be my 2017 race schedule …

Okay, I think I’ve got my complete 2017 race schedule figured out.

I think.

Which is a definite maybe.

But, let me explain it a little bit. I have a race each month except December. I might add a race in December, but I am not planning on it. It’s a good rest month after a long year of running.

My busiest month is June. I have seven races planned for the month. Yes, seven. I have Ragnar during the first weekend, the Utah Valley Marathon on the 10th, the Bear Lake Trifecta (three half marathons in three days) the following week and then the Utah Midnight Run (Friday night) and AF Canyon Race Against Cancer (Saturday morning) the following weekend.

I have three total back-to-back races planned. My first being the Salt Flats 50K (April 28) and Tulip Festival (April 29), Utah Midnight Run (June 23) and AF Canyon Race Against Cancer (June 24) and then the Utah Midnight Run (July 7) and Hobbler Half (July 8).

The biggest of those back-to-backs the April one with my 50K and half marathon. Not sure how that’s going to go, but I am betting I’ll walk a lot of the Tulip Festival Half. A lot.

In total I have 32 races planned — 23 half marathons, 5 marathons, 2 ultra marathons, a 25K and the Ragnar Relay. This includes one indoor race, 5 trail races and the rest road races.

Lots of running.

And, if you’re trying to estimate miles — that’s about 525-530 miles. Just in racing miles.

So, yeah — it’s going to be a big mileage year.

My 2017 Race Schedule (January – June)

I have been writing about my 2017 race schedule for the past six months. I’ve gone through numerous revisions — additions, subtractions, more additions and then — even more subtractions. I’ve come to the realization that it’s pretty tough for me to keep a concrete schedule outside of 5-6 months.

So, that’s why we’re here.

As much as I would love to commit to my whole 2017 race schedule — I just can’t. There are a lot of factors that I am unsure about — so I just can’t fully commit. Especially now that I am working for Runtastic Events. I have a number of weekends committed to races that I am not running.

Which is kind of a bummer — because after not running the Nebo Half last year, I was looking forward to running it. It is my favorite half marathon. I mean, who doesn’t love a fast downhill race?

Anyways — when we get closer and gain a clearer picture I’ll tackle my schedule between July – December. I have signed up for a number of races between that time — i.e. Handcart Days Half, Revel Big Cottonwood and Huntsville Marathon — so it’s shaping up. I am just waiting to see what my October looks like to see if I can run the Pony Express 50 again.

So many options. So many decisions. But, I’ll let the last part of 2017 take care of itself when we get to that bridge.

I have a number of goals for my 2017 race schedule. They are in no particular order …

  1. Knockout as many races as possible so I can hit my 180 race goal by July 24, 2018.
  2. Run three ultra distance races (Jackpot Running Festival, Salt Flats and either Antelope Island/Pony Express).
  3. Run three marathon distance races (Ogden, Utah Valley, Huntsville).
  4. Continue to get fit and faster — break that dang 2:30 half marathon mark.
  5. Have a ridiculous amount of fun.

Okay, there are a few things you should note on my goals. One, this isn’t a speed year for me. Sure, I have a goal to break the 2:30 mark, but I know I’ll do that as I continue to focus on my health and weight. My PR is 2:08 — so I know I’m capable of it. I am just not sure if this will come in the Spring, Summer or Fall? All depends on my training — but, you better know I’ll give it my best shot.

My focus really is to knockout as many races as possible this year so I can hit my goal of 180 races on July 24, 2018. Why that specific date? Well, that’s when the Bountiful Handcart Days Half Marathon is (or should be) in 2018 and I want that to be my 180th race, because it was my first. It just seems fitting.

Plus, I want to get the goal out of the way so I can focus on my other goals — like speed, more ultras and non-race running goals. I’d like to do more solo-runs like I am planning in March. I want to move the focus of my running more to a life long venture not solely focused on races as I have been for the past five years.

As you can see below, my race schedule is very top heavy during the first half of the year. I have 20 races — which is one shine of my total 2016 races. That’s a lot of running. But, most of those races are being used mostly as training runs for my 50Ks and 50 miler in March. So they are races with purpose.

I am not anticipating adding more than 8-10 races in the last half of the year so it’ll kinda even out. The most I’ve ran was in 2014 when I ran 30 races — so that’s not unprecedented for me. It’s just going to be a lot of running. A LOT.

June is going to be the busiest month for me. It’s going to be nearly 150 miles of race miles — that includes Ragnar Wasatch Back (June 2-3), Utah Valley Marathon (June 10), Bear Lake Trifecta (June 15-17), Utah Midnight Run (June 23) and AF Canyon Race Against Cancer (June 24).

June is going to be cray cray.

Anyways, here is how my whole schedule will look between January to June. As I mentioned above — it’s going to be a lot of running. But, there isn’t anywhere else I’d want to be.

The Joshbys: Top 10 Race Medals of 2016

This past year I’ve run some 20+ races. Well, more like 25. I had a few 5K races in there as well. But, I’ve collected quite the cache of race medals in 2016. Lots of blingity bling.

As I have done the past couple of years I like to rank my favorites. There’s really no formula in my ranking. Other than what the medal means to me personally and whether or not I love the design.

I will admit that I am a sucker for big heavy medals. If I’m running 13.1 or more miles who doesn’t want a hunking piece of medal wrapped around their neck after the accomplishment? If I can’t feel the medal tugging on my neck than it’s not a very good medal.

Anyways, without any further adieu, here are my Top 10 race medals of 2016 …

1) Pony Express 50

Okay, this medal is tiny. The picture might make it appear bigger than it really is, but it’s pretty small. BUT — and that’s a big but — I love it. Not only do I like the simplistic design, but I love what it means to me.

I absolutely earned this medal. All 50 miles of the race. When I stare at this medal I think of all the training that went into this race and then all 50 miles of the race. I think of the miles spent running with Coach Blu, Jill and Jed. I think of the solo miles. And, the heaven and hell that was mile 45.

This medal has  is priceless to me and that’s what it earns the top spot of 2016.

2) The Haunted Half

Okay, I’m a little biased about this race medal, because I had a hand in the design. But, seriously, I absolutely love the sugar skull medal. I love the size, the design and colors. They just pop. Their festive and everything you’d want in a fun Halloween medal.

But, I know I’m not alone on that assessment, I number of people who ran The Haunted Half loved the size and design. And, I think if I hadn’t ran my 50 this year this would have earned the top spot.

3) Revel Big Cottonwood Marathon

I’ve always loved Revel’s race medals. I’ve ran the race since the inaugural race back in 2012 and each year the medals get better and better. This year’s medal is a true paperweight — classy and shiny.

I would race Revel races just for the medals, but they do a great job all around on their races — from the swag bags to race shirts to race logistics. A class organization that’s definitely portrayed through the race medal.

4) Timp Half

Another paperweight medal. But, I love the Timp Half. I love the clean gold look and it really is a hefty medal. Plus, when I brought it home my niece thought I won an Olympic gold medal. I may or may not have corrected her.

5) St. George Marathon

This was the third St. George Marathon that I’ve ran. And, quite honestly, I’ve grown to love the medals. They haven’t changed much since 2012. I remember getting handed it and thinking two things — “that’s small” and “did someone cut this out of a kitchen counter?”

But, you know what? After running the marathon a few extra times — I get it. It really embodies the marathon and surrounding area. The red rock feel is gorgeous AND each medal is different. They’re all unique, just like everyone’s race. No one race — or medal — is the same.

That’s why I’ll always love these medals.

6) Ogden Half Marathon

Ogden has had some pretty awesome medals in the past. The past few years they’ve gotten heavier and bigger — which is good. My favorite is still the gold medal from 2013 and this one is good too. Not their best, but whenever I look at this medal I’ll always remember my experience swimming to the finish line.

Then again, I’ll have a similar experience pretty much everytime I look at any of my Ogden race medals.

7) Bountiful Handcart Days Half Marathon

The Handcarts Days Half will always hold a special place in my heart (it was my first half). And, thankfully, over the years their medals have gotten better and better. I really liked last year’s race medal, but this one is awesome as well.

I love the pioneer spoke and colors. I’m not a HUGE fan of very colorful medals (unless designed well), because they can go overboard. But, I like the muted colors that go with the pioneer theme quite well.

8) AF Canyon Race Against Cancer

I love the size of the AF medal, but compared to last year’s medal — it’s a tad too busy. I do love the colors — blue and green — they pop well together. Still a very solid medal, but I love the simple AF logo medal from last year. Which ranked higher than this year’s medal.

9) Ragnar Relay Wasatch Back

RAGNAAAAAAR!!! I love all of my Ragnar medals. I love the amount of detail put into each one. My biggest gripe (if you would want to call it that) is that shape of the medal. It’s not balanced very well and sits on your neck kinda crooked. Still one of my favorites compared to year’s past.

The other thing I love about these is how each medal has a saying that is revealed when your team puts their medals together. That is really cool. And, really hits on the team aspect of Ragnar.

10) Red Rock Relay Park City

This is a solid medal. I love the simple clean look. I love monochrome medals and this is definitely monochrome. I do wish the the imprint of the medal was a bit more definitive. It becomes a bit too difficult to make out the design in certain light.

But, other than that — I love this medal and the memories associated with it. It is a cherished.

Changes once again to my 2017 race schedule …

I think it’s becoming a near reoccurring theme that my 2017 race schedule keeps changing. And, well, it is. Because, that’s what it’s been like for me the past couple of years. But, it’s really shaping up to where I want/like it. I want to train hard during the winter months and then lightening out with half marathons come June/July-ish.

Plus, I want to maintain my ultra training as much as I can. And, to help with that I have signed up for a couple of trail races and ultras. I have two marathons planned for next year, but I am debating on the DesNews Marathon or Half Marathon in July still. It was my first marathon and that was five years ago. I kinda feel the desire to run it. But, I’m really leaning towards no — July marathons suck. Too hot.

But, I feel good about my race schedule from January to June at least.

Tackling the 2017 race schedule …

As noted last week and pretty much ever since last December, I’ve been trying to work out my 2017 race schedule. And, I won’t lie — it’s been tougher than past years. Why? I think it’s two fold — one, I want to try out some new races. And, two, I’m making the conversion from road to trails slowly, but surely.

There’s a part of me that REALLY wants to figure out my race schedule from January to December. But, I am realizing more and more — I can’t really do that. I know which races I want to run. Plus, I am planning on running the Walt Disney World Half in January 2018, so I’ll have to make sure most of my races in late 2017 don’t cost me a lot in travel and registration fees.

I have most of my races selected from January to about June-ish. There are still a couple of races I am debating on in May and June, so I feel like I can’t commit to those. But, January to April, I am pretty much dead set on my schedule.

The races I have registered for until April are SLC Tri Club Indoor Half, Emigration Canyon Half and the Tulip Festival Half — I am planning on signing up for the St. George Half soon. And, then when registration opens for the other races.

I am getting more and more excited about next year’s race schedule, not just because I am nearing completion of my 180 race goal, but I am excited to be hitting the trails and running some new races.

Another Look at 2017 …

I am really trying to plan out my 2017 race schedule. If you’ve been following my blog even for the past three months you’ll know I’ve been working on my 2017 schedule pretty obsessively. Which is fine. I mean, it’s always subject to change — especially being three months away from the turning of the calendar.

There have been a few races I’ve been going waffling over — namely the DesNews Marathon and a few races in the summer. I don’t want to do marathons next year … but, I do. Especially since 2017 will be my five year anniversary of my first marathon — at DesNews.

I’m feeling a pull to just stick to half marathons and some trail 25-30Ks. I really want to do some more trail races and it’s kinda hard to pick and choose what I want to run. It’s real hard. Especially when I am still a rookie out on the trails.

So, I am sticking to half marathons and 25-30Ks in 2017. I am trying to mimic my 2013 race schedule where I ran nothing but half marathons. This will help me work on my speed so I can hit my running milestones and hopefully a new half PR.

Plus, I want to hit up some races in locations I can check off on my 40 Before 40 bucket list. So there’s that as well.

RACE #122: Ragnar Relay Wasatch Back

RAGNAAAAAAR!!! What a fun and wild weekend. What a fun and wild week! Not only did I have RAGNAR this weekend, but this week was full of family weddings, parties and festivities. My little brother got married on Thursday so most of the week was spent prepping for that.

Since I had to be ready by 4am to ride up to Logan on Friday night — as soon as I got home from the wedding reception I had to switch gears and get ready for RAGNAR! It was 11pm once I ran to the store and picked up my food — then I quickly packed everything up as quickly as I could, because I knew I needed SOME sleep that night. Especially considering that I wasn’t expecting much the following evening.

Well, the goal of SOME sleep turned into like an hour and a half. I got packed alright — though I was afraid I was forgetting something. It helps this being my fourth RAGNAR. So I knew what to pack for my legs, etc. But, I was just wired from the wedding and most my time in bed was spent wide awake. Not cool.

With whatever sleep I got I got up at 3am, showered, fed and out the door around 4-4:30am. I wasn’t riding in van two so I didn’t HAVE to be in Logan at that time, but my ride was in van one so I hitched a ride and hung out for a few hours in Logan with Chris and Lisa before we needed to trek down to Eden for the exchange.

The one thing I love about RAGNAR is meeting new people. Except for one year, I’ve never really known the people in my van before the race. And, I like it that way. I love meeting new people. It’s fun. The strangest of strangers can become some of the best of friends.

And, while I knew some of the teammates they were mostly all from Logan — so interactions were sparse and usually whenever they came down to races around SLC or Provo. So it was really fun to bond with them and of course we had a blast. Lots of inside jokes, lots of laughing — just a lot of fun.

There’s a lot I could write about from our team’s adventure, but for the sake of trying to explain numerous inside jokes and back stories, I thought I would focus more on my own legs and their back stories. Because, really, I think you could write a whole book of experiences about RAGNAR.

Anyways — here are my leg reports. But, first let me indulge myself in one more — RAGNAAAAAAAR!!!


FIRST LEG

Leg 11


I knew what I was getting myself into on this run — it was going to be hot and it was going to be hilly, especially in the last 1-1.5 mile of the leg. So when I got handed off the baton I saved my legs for that last stretch because I wanted to power up the hills.

Though I started my leg at about a quarter to 7pm — it was still pretty hot. And, after being in the car for most of the day it took me a while to get my legs behind me. So I just focused on running at a comfortable pace and just went. I started listening to my music on the leg, but about 2.5 miles into it — I ditched it. I just wanted to focus on the running.

I was getting passed fairly consistently along the whole route. When I first started running RAGNAR it always bugged me whenever I got passed. But, when I’m running my own race and doing my own thing — it doesn’t bug me any more.

Especially considering that RAGNAR started our team later than we should have started (that’s a whole different story) most of the runners passing me were from faster teams. So, of course they’re going to pass me.

But, the point of pride came when we hit those two up hill stretches. The runners that blew past me earlier were suddenly walking the hills. But, not me. I kept trugging along and beasted up the hill — passing three runners along the way. That validated my training and really gave me a sense of pride.

I was proud of this leg. I powered through it and gave it my all — pretty much all you can ask for, right? After my leg, I decided to livestream my leg review. You can catch it here …


SECOND LEG

Leg 23

Of all the legs going into RAGNAR — I wasn’t looking forward to this one. Not just because it was my longest run, but it’s a tough leg. I ran this leg a couple years ago when it was 11 miles long and it kicked my trash. I knew it what I was getting myself into — so at least I knew what to prepare myself for.

Still doesn’t make it easier.

Unlike the first time I ran this leg — I didn’t start at 2am. This time I started around 5:30am when it was relatively light outside. Running trails is much, much easier with some light so I was thankful for that. It eased a lot of the anxiety I had going into the leg.

The game plan for this leg was to just keep going. Great game plan I know. I just knew I was going to be tired and probably sore from the lack of sleep and being cramped in a van for hours on end. And, the hours leading to my leg — it was still the same game plan, because I was EXTREMELY tired.

I tried sleeping some between 10pm and midnight, but it just didn’t happen. And, having not gotten much sleep the night before or that week for that matter — I was zapped. I wasn’t looking forward to my leg at all.

When I got passed the baton at the exchange I just ran a nice slow and steady pace. I knew I couldn’t — and shouldn’t — press out too fast. Mainly because I wanted to save whatever energy I had for the miles later in the leg. I got passed quite regularly throughout the leg — actually I counted 43 runners. I passed one runner, but that was because they were tying their shoe. They eventually passed me too.

But, again — I don’t run RAGNAR for the kills.

Anyways — about 3-4 miles into the leg I just lost all energy. This affected me not just physically, but mentally as well. I just wanted to be done. I was tired, lethargic and starting to get a bit cranky. I got supported a couple times by the van — which helped a lot. I got a banana and plenty of water in me. Including a few Swedish Fish for the unsupported part of my leg. The spikes of sugar helped.

Throughout the leg I just kept each foot in front of the other TRYING to focus on everything besides running. I tried listening to some music, but that didn’t help — just made me more anxious. So, I just ran — and chatted with passing runners. Distraction helps me in these kind of moments.

As I was watching my FitBit for my mileage I noticed at the tail end of my run that I was running further than the advertised 9.7 miles. The leg was more like 10.5 miles — which was confirmed with two other runners who ran the same leg. I’m glad I didn’t know this until later into my leg, because if I knew it before hand I would have wanted to traded legs with someone who had a two mile leg.

I’m half joking about that one.

But, by the time I got to the exchange — I was worn out and just grateful to be done. I quickly switched out my clothes and looked forward to a quick shower and hopefully a nap. Which turned out to be a long enough nap (30 minutes) to delay a total collapse, but I cat napped throughout the rest of the day.

THIRD LEG

Leg 35

This was an easy leg — obviously. Being 2.2 miles I was just eager to get to it, run it and just finish so I could get home and sleep for hours on end. My goal for this leg was to just run the whole thing. I knew it wouldn’t be the greatest pace, because of the fatigue– but, I didn”t care. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t stop and walk.

And, being only 2.2 miles — with a loss of 239 feet, I knew that was 100% doable.

And, well, I did it.

I started running at about 6pm which made it for somewhat hot of a run, but it didn’t bug me much — again, because it was only a 2.2 miles long leg. I just focused on getting the thing done.

I did pass a couple of runners — none of which were tying their shoes. And, none of which who passed me later on in the leg. This gave me a boost of confidence. As worn out as I was throughout the race, I still felt strong. I credit a lot of that to Whole30 and my new mentality (but, that’s a post for another day).

RAGNAAAAAAAR OVERVIEW!!!

As difficult and challenging as this year’s RAGNAR was for me — I still absolutely loved it. I had a great team and van — we had a blast. And, I was definitely spoiled. If you ever run with Chris and Lisa — they will ruin RAGNAR for you. They have the best set up — personal cubbies in the back, bag storage carrier on top of the car, power outlets galore throughout the van. It was perfect.

But, more than that — it was just fun to party with them, Lacey, Heather and Marvin. We had a lot of fun. As sleep deprived and exhausted as we were — RAGNAR was a lot of fun. It was bittersweet leaving the team when I got dropped off at home.

Anyways — I am already looking forward to Wasatch Back 2017! I totally want to run with Chris and Lisa’s team again (like I told you, they ruined me RAGNAR for me for life). I would love to run Vegas RAGNAR, but that’s the same weekend as Antelope Island 50K and Snow Canyon Half Marathon — not that I’m planning on running both (obviously), it’s just those have top priority over Vegas RAGNAR.

I am however running Red Rock Relay in Park City on October 8th and that one I am PUMPED about. This will be my first Red Rock Relay and I am running with the Addict II Athlete team. That’ll be a lot of fun. And, I’ll post more about that later this week.

But, I love relays because to me they’re what running is all about — RUNNING. FRIENDS. FUN.

YEAH RAGNAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!

I’m getting pretty excited about my race this Saturday — I love the AF Race Against Cancer. Not only is it an awesome race down American Fork Canyon (one of the most gorgeous canyons in Utah), but it’s also a great cause I strongly believe in. 100% of all race fees go to charity — that’s pretty awesome, eh?

My goal for the race is simple — I want to come in somewhere between the 2:30:00-2:39:59 range. I am not looking to necessarily beat my Drop 13 Half time (2:31:14) — just stick in that 2:30 range to continue to build up that stamina so I can work towards a sub-2:30 at the DesNews Half (July 25) next month.

Knowing the course — the canyon won’t be a problem, the last 3-4 miles can be difficult after coming out of the canyon. So I am going to have to pace myself on this race — especially in the canyon. If I have it in me around mile 10-11, I’ll go for it. But, I really want to pace myself and build up that stamina.

So with that said — I’m planning on running with my Garmin. This will be the first time in — ages. Well, over a year. I want (well, need) to be deliberate since I really want to sub-2:20 at Nebo in September.

But, with all of that — I am just excited to be running this race, especially on the #Run4Dith team. We have over 25-30 other runners on the team and we’re planning on wearing pink for our friend Meridith aka “The Dith” — who will also be running with us! That’s more exciting than just being on the team. It’s great having her out there running again!
