Running in 2018 …

A couple of weeks ago, I blogged about my road to 180 races. My 180th race will be July 24th — pretty much SMACK in the middle of the year. So that means I’ve got January through July pretty much covered — but, what about the last half?

What’s after my 180th race?

That’s a good question.

While I am trying to figure out my 2018 race schedule, I’ve had a couple focuses — one, my 100 mile run and, two, not doing as many back-to-back race weekends of a half marathon or longer. I know that if I am going to faster, especially during my half marathons, I am going to have to scale back on the long races.

I don’t anticipate myself PRing next year. But, I am wanting to use 2018 to set the foundation to PR in 2019. Well, I shouldn’t just say PR, but to break my long time goal of sub-two’ing a half marathon. That’s the goal.

To work on that fountain, I plan on not just scaling back on the races — but, focusing on doing two races a month. Ideally, a half marathon and a trail race, a month. This would be on top of shorter training runs on the other weekends. Runs that I want to vary between a canyon downhill run, trail run and challenge run (a mentally challenging run — run uphill, midnight all night run, etc) — but, I’ll blog about that later.

I just want to challenge myself, get faster and mentally stronger in order to attempt and achieve my goal. A goal I’d love to meet at either the Nebo Half or Revel Big Cottonwood Half in 2019. Something that seems rather doable for me.

But, 2018 will have to set that kind of success up for me. So, while I am scanning UltraSignUp, UtahRunning.com, Running in the USA, RaceEntry.com and other registration websites I’ve come up with tentative schedule for 2018.

Remember these are only races 13.1 miles or longer. I am sure I’ll have a few 10Ks and 5Ks planned throughout the year. Also, races in bold are ones that I am registered for already. And, there are a few in the later months that are planned on a projected date.

RACE #163: The Haunted Half — Salt Lake City

I absolutely love running in October — for many reasons. I love the cool October air, the changing leaves and the plethora of races during the month. You’d think July and August would be the most popular month to run, but it’s too hot during the summer months. October is PERFECT conditions for running.

Earlier in the year I wasn’t planning on running The Haunted Half, but those plans changed when I resigned my position with Runtastic Events. It wasn’t an easy decision to make, because I loved who I worked with. But, I had too much to juggle with a full-time job, a family run business and a podcast among other things. It didn’t leave much of an evening for me.

But, as much I will miss it, I’m glad I am still able to at least run The Haunted Half and the other Runtastic Events races. Their races are always down the most gorgeous canyons with the most awesome shirts (biased here), best volunteers (biased here) and coolest Finisher’s medals (once again, biased here). So, being able to go back to “just” being a runner of their races is exciting — but, with a much deeper appreciation for what it takes to put on a wicked awesome event.

Since I wasn’t working the event, I decided to not just run the race — but, to pace it. So, I volunteered to sweep the course with the RYR Pacers. I don’t think it goes without saying how much I love sweeping courses. It’s the party in the back.

My sister Jenny also decided to run with me — especially since she’s always wanted to run down Emigration Canyon. She used to run quite a bit a number of years ago and just recently started picking it back up. Like me, she also struggles with Hashimoto’s Disease and has recently balanced it along with losing over 30lbs. So while there were nerves on running a half marathon again, she felt emboldened with her recent changes in health.

I was more than excited to have her join me, because she was the first of my siblings to run with me — not just a half marathon, but a 5K a number of years back. So this race was a bit extra special for me.

Slowly, but surely, I’ll get my whole family to run a half or full marathon with me — BRUHAHAHA!

The night before the race my sister had a million and one nerves going on. I got texts throughout the evening on what she should bring and wear. I kinda chuckled, because I remember having those nerves for races like this. Heck, I still get nerves for races — especially ultras. But, that’s a whole different story.

After leaving Bountiful and making the trek to Sugarhouse, we rode the buses up to the start of the race. We knew there was suspected rain and/or snow. But, apparently,  it was just the snow part that we got. Lots of it too.

Around 5:30am the canyon got a blizzard. This halted the buses from coming up the canyon for a while, which delayed everything. Once our bus got to the start line we just sat there without any runners getting out. This was the case pretty much for all the buses. I wasn’t complaining, because I knew it was going to be COLD outside.

Once I got to the point that I needed to use the Honey Buckets, we hopped off the bus. The race was delayed about 10 minutes or so. I wasn’t sure, because I just saw a mass of humanity making their way under the pumpkin arch. Almost immediately I was trying to figure out my adjusted pace.

But, almost as immediately as we started, we were slowed down by the icy road from the blizzard. The first two miles or so were fairly slippery and it was difficult to navigate. Jenny and I couldn’t get a good rhythm because as soon as we did — more ice. So we did what the road could give us. We weren’t the only ones having issues with the roads as well, many runners ahead of us were too.

After a couple miles in the roads were dry and we picked up our pace. And, so did the runners around us. The chaotic mess subsided and we were all good. But, once again, I tried to figure out my new pace. But, at this point I knew I was going to be off on the times I needed to hit on Sunnyside and 2100 S. — not much, but off.

Around Mile 7 wanting to keep up with my pace, Jenny and I decided to split. She was going to focus on the group in the back, while I tried to run ahead to meet the cutoffs the race wanted me to hit. It worked out pretty well actually.

I was about 13-15 minutes off because of the delays, but I made up good time. Because of the delay the officers, thankfully, kept the intersections and roads open a bit longer. And, once we got out of the canyon we made our way toward the 900 East area where we meandered around some neighborhoods before making our way to Sugarhouse Park.

i am usually not a fan of running around neighborhoods, but the last four miles were pretty gorgeous. The older homes lined with trees transformed to almost a completely different city. The homes were gorgeous and well kept — I believe many of the U of U professors live around in this neighborhood? Either way, it was a fun few miles.

Once we got to the park, we made a loop around the pond before approaching the finish line on the east side of the park. The race was over. And, I finished in about 3:30. I haven’t confirmed the time yet as my results haven’t posted yet. But, it was about the time I was expecting. A couple minutes later Jenny came in with Christy — all smiles. A perfect way to end a race, right?

I hung out at the end for a while. My friend Lizz hung out with her Mom after their 5K to see me and my sister come in. Both ended up PRing their race. They both got to ring the PR bell! Hopefully come next year I will be ringing that bell too! But, that’s a post for another day.

After both Jenny and I limped back to the car we made our way home. After a quick shower and lunch I then headed up to Lagoon for Pod Bash Lagoon Day. I had tons of fun — but — that made for a looooooong day on my feet. My FitBit registered over 20 miles so by the end of the day my feet were aching.

But, the way I looked at it — it was GREAT ultra training.

Oh, the mentality of a runner, right?

Anyways, it was a great day overall. So many highlights with friends — both my running and Pod Bash friends. But, I’ll always remember this as my first race with my sister. We had a blast and she did too. And, she even mentioned that she wanted to do more in the future.

And, that left a smile on my face.

I got her.


MY REMAINING 2017 RACES

My 180 race journey is RAPIDLY coming to an end. It’s hard to believe that I am just 17 races away from reaching the goal I set some six years ago. It’s also hard to believe that within the next month I am going to be cranking out six more races toward that goal. It’s going to be A LOT of running.

But, I am excited for the adventure.

This Saturday I am running both the SoJo Half and Howloween Half. Then The Haunted Half in Provo the following before doing another two race day when I run both the Snow Canyon Half and Joshua Tree Half. My sixth race will be the Mt. View Trail Half out on Antelope Island the following week.

The Mt. View Trail Half will be my last half marathon of the year. It will also be my last race before heading to Europe for a couple weeks. Two weeks that will be a nice break before going all in on my training for Jackpot.

But, right now the focus is these next four weeks and six races. Let the adventure begin.

I am soooooo close to my goal …

Wow. After this past weekend’s race — I realized that I am only 19 races away from my goal! NINETEEN! I’m in the TEENS! Time flies so fast. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been doing this now for over six years.

But, it’s also hard to believe that I am reaching this 10 year goal — three years early! Who would have thought? Who would have imagined the experiences I’ve had, races I’ve run and people I’ve met over the past years? I feel extremely blessed being able to do what I love and with people that I admire, look up to and gain inspiration from nearly daily.

Sometimes when I think and plan for the end of this 180 race goal — I have to remember that it’s not the end of running. Because it won’t be. I’ll keep doing it. I might be a bit more deliberate here and there as I shift focus, but I’ll still be running to my heart’s content.

But, as I look at the remaining races toward my goal, I’m getting excited. Many are races I’ve run numerous times, some a couple times a while ago and even a couple that I’ve never done. And, then of course there’s the Jackpot Running Festival where I am attempting 100 miles.

I am excitedly nervous about that race. I know I can do it. I know I will do it. And, despite the crappy year I’ve had with injuries and my health — I know it’s doable. I will be ready come February.

So there’s lots of running ahead before I reach the finish line at the Handcart Days Half Marathon next July — which I am looking forward to running! And, as you can see I am trying to be more deliberate with my running, especially after Jackpot. I am running any races 13.1 or longer on back to back weekends — well, except for Provo City and Vigor Big Cottonwood — but, I am planning on sweeping Provo City again, so I’m not really counting it.

But, I am planning on scaling back the races, not just to hit the 180th race in July, but to also get faster. I don’t expect to PR next year (though that’d be nice), but I do want to get back into the 2:20-2:30 range by the end of the year with the help of continued health and some specific coaching.

I am not sure exactly what my race season will look like after my 180th race, but I’d like to keep to two long races a month for as long as I can keep that up — and preferably a road and trail race.

I have some time to figure that all out. But, for now the focus is really Jackpot in February while also focusing on getting myself to number 180 next July.

RACE #135: The Haunted Half — Provo

After a week off from running and pretty much anything strenuous after my 50 miler, I hopped back into the saddle with the Haunted Half. This is my sixth Haunted Half (three in Provo and three in SLC) and I love these races. They’re always a party and just tons of fun. They’re a great race to cap off the racing season.

And, for the fifth time — I have also swept the course. In fact the only time I didn’t sweep the course was in 2013 when I ran the Haunted Half for the first time. And, as much I love both downhill courses in which I can fly down — I much prefer to sweep, because that’s where the real party is at.

If I wasn’t sweeping this year’s course again, I am not sure if I would have ran it — mainly because of last week’s 50 miler. Then again as I am typing this, I’m totally lying to myself — I probably would still run it. I’d either go my pace or just joint the sweeping party in the back.

Anyways — my friends Jim and Jill — wanted to join the party and kind of see what it was like sweeping. They’ve heard about the number of races I’ve swept and really wanted to see if it was THAT much fun as I make it out to be. Of course I told them they could tag along (this invitation is out to anyone whenever I sweep).

Game plans for sweeping really vary according to the course and race. Some racing companies have very strict cut off times, some don’t and others are somewhere in between. And, this can vary even from race to race within the same race company.

For instance sweeping Timp is much different than sweeping this race. Since we’re on public roads down the canyon in American Fork Canyon I have to be out of the canyon at a certain time. So my goal is to keep that pace and encourage runners who are behind that pace to keep up with me. If they can’t they’re bussed to the mouth of the canyon where they can resume the race.

Whereas here there isn’t a strict cutoff while in the canyon, because the majority of the race runs along the Provo River Trail where it doesn’t impede traffic. So the pace is less of a hard cut-off and more of “as fast as the slowest runner” approach. Which I like, because it gives you time to get to perfect strangers.

My plan for this race was to hold back after the gun time and let the masses go and then kind of fartlek the first 5-6 miles, especially since that’s usually the steepest part of the race. So most of the walking breaks would come when we caught up with the last of the runners ahead of us.

When I don’t have to worry about a certain pace I don’t like interfering much with the runners. This is their race and I want them to enjoy it. I don’t like really letting my presence known until about the last half of the race if I can avoid it, because let’s be honest — no body wants to be caught by the sweeper.

I get that — I’ve been in the same boat. And, if someone says something to me, especially in the first half of the race I make sure they know I’m friendly and won’t sweep them off the course — and more than anything just want to be friends with them.

So the first 5-6 miles of the race was just spent fartleking along with Jill and Jim. And, we had a blast! Jim was dressed as Bat Bacon — and was definitely the life of the party. Cyclists, runners and walkers along the trail couldn’t help but smile seeing this giant piece of bacon dressed as Batman trudging along the trail.

We stopped for pictures along the way — many of Bat Bacon in superimposed snapshots — and countless others of the skeletons and signs along the course. Many in which we dressed up with some of our gear or anything laying around that might add to the picture op.

It was fun.

At Mile 6 I caught up with JessicaSue whom I paced at the Salt Lake Haunted Half last year. I suspected that at some point we would catch up. She was running with her husband and a friend. When Jim, Jill and I caught up with her she was starting to have some calf issues.

We yo-yo’d between her and a couple of other runners, but around miles 8-9 we ran exclusively with her party. I was impressed with her resolve and attitude through those last miles — it was tough on her. But, after dealing with similar issues last year I could see how much stronger she was this year in dealing with the pain.

The conditions for the race couldn’t have been better either. The weather was perfect for an October race. Probably a bit warmer than usual and running in a one-piece jumpsuit probably wasn’t the best choice for me. But, it was what it was and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

Jill and Jim were invaluable in helping JessicaSue and the party alone the course. Jim provided the music and comic relief while Jill brought her insight and perspective to help JessicaSue process and deal with the pain. They might not have been “official” sweepers, but they were every bit invaluable.

One we were out of the canyon we had about three miles left and we just gutted it out. I was so proud of JessicaSue. It wasn’t easy. Even I was having issues with my legs around this point just from my 50 the week before. It was a lot of time spent on my feet.

But, the focus was simple — get to the finish line. And, we did step by step, mile by mile. It wasn’t easy, but we made it.

Tricia and the Runtastic crew were fantastic to us. They left the famous pumpkin arch up until we got to the finish line. And, we were greeted by ice cold water and food. I couldn’t have asked for better hospitality. They really put the runner first and made sure we all got the same treatment.

It was great being able to pace JessicaSue again and do so with Jill and Jim. My legs were very fatigued, which I guess is kind of expected being out there on the course for over five hours. But, I tried keeping it into perspective — it was great ULTRA training for my race this weekend.

Plus, half way through the race I started fantasizing about ice baths and ibuprofen. So on my way home I took a pit stop to the gas station to get a couple of bags of ice and treated myself to painfully wonderful ice bath once I got home. Between that and the Ibuprofen it absolutely helped relieve the pain.

All in all, it’s another race underneath my belt, but it was also a great reminder to me on why I do this. I love pacing. It’s not always easy, but it is one of the most rewarding things about running to me. And, anything worth doing is never easy.

I knew it was going to be tough being my first run after my 50 miler, but it was great preparation for this weekend’s 50K. Not just physically, but mentally. I want to get one more run and another good workout this weekend before my race — and I feel like I’ll be okay for my race.

I mean, I know I can do it. I’m not worried about that. I’m just worried about having fresh legs.

But, the season is winding down. I have a couple more race before the end of the year and I plan on focusing on strength training in December and most of January before refocusing on running again. But, that’s all a post for another day.

I sometimes question my sanity. Okay, I often question my sanity. Well, okay, I always question my sanity. I mean who follows up a 50 miler with a 50K a couple of weeks after the 50 miler? Idiot runners that’s who.

And, as idiotic as it sounds — I can’t be any more excited. I love the longer distances. I love the trails. I love the challenges. I love the scenery. I love the community. I just love, love, love the goal and task at hand.

The goal is to simply finish like all of my races over 26.2 miles. But, I do want to do better than last. I ran the 50K in ten hours — I want to do better than that. I’m not in a position to say for certain if that’s going to be by a couple of hours or couple of minutes? I just want to do better than last year.

I will be running this by myself — well, without Tim or Jason. So I am not sure what that will do? It will be a good challenge for me and I am excited to just do my best and enjoy the ride. Is there anything else to it?

But, after this race, as I’ve mentioned before, I am planning on focusing more on the weight and strength training to give my legs some rest and focus on getting stronger so my training in the spring can be better. I feel like I’m in a good place and I can’t wait to balance things out a bit more even.

InstaReplay: The Haunted Half — Provo

The race season is slowly coming to a hault — and it’s fitting that it ends with one of my favorite races. I love the Haunted Half — it’s a gorgeous race down a beautiful canyon and just a lot of fun. Once again I’ve swept the course — this was my fifth Haunted Half I’ve swept since 2014 — that includes both Provo and SLC.

And, once again, I had a blast. I was joined by Jim and Jill for the entirety of the race and for the last half of the race I helped pace my friend JessicaSue to the finish line. I paced her to the finish line of the Salt Lake last year.

RACE #135: The Haunted Half (Sweeper), October 29, 2016. Once again paced and swept one my favorite races! This is my fifth time sweeping a Haunted Half race. It's always an adventure and it's always a party. @jvgabica and @jimgastelum joined me for the party as they wanted to see what this sweeping gig was like. Their character and personalities were much needed as we helped motivate runners toward the finish line. The last half of the race I was able to run with @back_the_blue. I paced her last year at the Salt Lake Haunted Half and can't begin to tell you how proud I was of her this year. She was joined by her husband and friend and she fought through a lot of cramping and pain, but SHE DID IT! She got herself to the finish line and finished her second half marathon! Being a part of moments like these and helping her along the course is why I love pacing. RACE #111: The Provo Haunted Half

It’s hard to believe that this race is my second to last pacing gig of the year. I’m kinda bummed about that, because I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience I have had pacing and sweeping so many races this year. It’s really enriched my running experience. It’s taught me to (literally) slow down and enjoy the beauty that running has to offer.

Saturday’s race in Provo wasn’t any different. As I have mentioned before I love the Haunted Half races for a number of reasons — the first is probably how much of a party atmosphere they are. The fact that it’s a Halloween race naturally brings that kind of vibe along with it.

But, it’s also a celebration of the end of the racing season. All of the local marathons are pretty much done and these Halloween races just feel like a celebration of all the goals, achievements and accomplishments achieved during the race season. It’s really a great atmosphere, a fun atmosphere.

This week was I was sweeping the course along with my friend Tim Gill. This was the third race we’ve swept this year — Jordan River Half, Legacy Midnight Run and this one. We’ve also ran a couple of races together — including my 100th race at the Handcart Days Half. And, that’s not including the number of races last year. Needless to say, we’ve ran together a lot — and we always have a blast.

Tim and I carpooled down to Provo the morning of the race and rode the bus to the starting line where we met up with a number of our friends while pouring over the few fire pits. It was cold, but luckily they had some hot chocolate to help temper that. Plus, I tried to move around as much as I could to keep from freezing. That helped some, but I kinda wished the race started earlier than 8:45am — especially considering we waited around nearly for two hours after the bus dropped us off.

Since Tim and were sweeping we hung back while the mass of madness moved past us across the starting line. It gave me a couple of extra minutes to pick up some discarded gloves (I love the race gloves they give you — SO WARM!) and watch everyone as they discarded their mylar blankets alongside the road. It really looked like the spoils after a Pop Tarts convention.

I brought along my bigger backpack for this race as well, because I wanted to pack it with the gloves and any discarded shirts or hoodies I found along the course. I actually did manage to find a nice blue hoodie, some head bands and a Domino’s Pizza shirt. I think of all the finds I was more excited about the Domino’s shirt. I have plans of walking into a Domino’s Pizza restaurant with car keys in hand to see if I can get a pizza delivery handed to me.

The course pretty much follows that of the Provo City and Provo River Trail Half Marathons — it runs down Vivian Park, along the River Trail and then finishes outside of the canyon. Instead of finishing at The Riverwoods or Downtown Provo this course ends at the University Mall in Orem. It’s a beautiful course — I really like the Provo River Trail, it’s a great place for a race, especially running down Vivian Park.

The last couple miles of the race Tim and I helped pace in a couple of runners who were running their first half marathon. From what we gathered from them was that they thought they had signed up for the 5K and later found out it was actually the half marathon. But, instead of changing the race or backing out of it completely they decided to prepare for it about five or so week ago. You’re probably think that’s crazy — which is it, but really it’s crazy AWESOME! Mad props to the two for sticking with it.

I (finally) got my Runtastic Trilogy medal for the year. I officially earned it last week, but picked it up this week. To earn the medal you need to run three of Runtastic’s half marathons. Blingy medal, eh?

In all this was another great experience. I will always love pacing and sweeping courses. Runners inspire me — always will. Each journey is individualized and personal — and epic in nature. And, I always come away from a race enriched and inspired from seeing runners accomplish goals, milestones and unrealized dreams.

Now the next couple of weeks is focused on the final preparations for my 50K on the 14th. I am all kinds of excited and nervous, but I know I’ve got what it takes to accomplish the task at hand and I know exactly where to draw the needed inspiration when I will need it.

But, first let’s get past next week’s Snow Canyon Half Marathon.

Swept @thehauntedhalf in Provo on Saturday. It was a great experience alongside @timmgill68 — we even got into a water fight along the way. I’m always in awe of the runners I pace at the back of the pack. It doesn’t matter how long they take, it just matters that they get there. There’s a life lesson in there. I’m running the Snow Canyon Half in southern Utah next before my first ultra the following week on Antelope Island! Excited and nervous. NEXT RACE: SNOW CANYON HALF

As I sit here shivering I am thinking two things — one, I should probably put socks on and, two, I can’t wait to run in St. George this upcoming weekend. It will be a short reprieve from the turning fall weather and I can’t be any more excited. Sure, the weather this fall hasn’t been THAT bad, but when you hate the cold you take advantage of these opportunities.

I am doing this race as part of my requirements for the St. George Runner Series. I have to run two Washington County-based races between now and April to guarantee my spot into the 2016 St. George Marathon (Oct. 1). So the plan is to run the Snow Canyon Half this weekend and then I’ll be running the Bakers Dozen Half Marathon on December 12th in Hurricane. So I’ll be done with my requirement for the Runner Series before the end of this year. SCORE!

I am going to be carpooling down to southern Utah with my friends Jason and Tammy Henry. I am excited, I love road trips with friends. Especially, when you haven’t gotten their life stories yet. And, there’s plenty of time for life stories on the way down — especially between Nephi and Cedar City.

Jason and I will also strategize for our 50K the following week — we’re both virgin ultra marathoners so we’ll definitely need a good strategy. So far our only strategy is to not get gored by a buffalo, don’t poop our pants and to not die. Admirable goals for an ultra on Antelope Island, right?

Anyways, I’m looking forward to the road trip, the race, the warmth and the red rock! Oh, how I love the red rock of southern Utah — but that’s a post for another day.

THE UTAH RUNCAST BECOMING RUNCAST USA

Kind of a large announcement concerning the podcast. Episode IV was our last podcast known as The Utah Runcast — starting immediately we are becoming Runcast USA. We still have basically the same crew, same familiar banter, but in addition to talking about running in Utah, we’ll be expanding our audience and outreach. As much as we LOVE Utah, we don’t feel confined to just Utah.

This slight direction change will also enable us to better reach out to other runners and podcast guests nationwide. This also includes addressing and talking about national running news, happenings and races. We are in the works about doing a special Boston Marathon episode, running for charity episode, marathon training episode, food and running episode and MANY, MANY others!

It’s going to be awesome. And, a lot of fun.

We’ve been migrating our social media accounts over to the new name — so make sure you’re following us, so you won’t miss an episode. We’re on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We hope you are just as excited for the changes and slightly new direction of the show.

MONDAY’S MOTIVATION

The 95th Fartlek Friday™ – So, um, this is Halloween? Can it be Christmas already? Cuz — I’ll gladly trade in all my candy corn for a chocolate Santa

Okay — let’s be honest here. I have a love/hate relationship with Halloween. Well, actually, I am not sure if I would call it love or hate — I’m indifferent. Indifferent leading towards hating it.

As a kid — I loved the candy (well except for Bit-O-Honeys, peanut butter taffy and Nerds), but I hated the act of Trick-or-Treating. Kids these days have it easy — all they have to do is go to some neighborhood parking lot and beg for candy from someone else’s trunk.

When I was a kid we have to huff and puff (well, at least in my case) around the neighborhood to get a good haul of candy. Even worse if we wanted to get BIG candy bars we had to walk UP the mountain side of Bountiful to where all the doctors, dentist and rich people lived to get them.

Halloween was tough as a kid. Especially a fat kid. But, at least I got a sweet reward after my efforts. There’s probably a life lesson somewhere in there?

Now as an adult the tide has turned. Obviously, I don’t go Trick-or-Treating, but the temptation of candy is still ever present. And, when you’re trying to lose weight it doesn’t really jive that well with the ol’ diet.

Being stuck at home handing out candy is probably the worst about dieting over the holiday, because if you’re not careful it goes from “one for them” to “one for them, one for me” to “one for them, two for me” to “all for me.”

It’s a vicious cycle.

I really should just hand out cans of green beans and carrots. But, then we’d be “THAT HOUSE” on the block. I live in Utah there’s a reputation I must maintain and getting a hit for being a “crappy Halloween candy house” is a hit I can’t take.

There are also other reasons I am not that BIG into Halloween. I am not that big into the haunted houses, ghosts and ghouls and demonic things. I never have been. And, which might sound weird especially being a paranormal investigator. But, I don’t necessarily equate ghosts with Halloween.

But, I am just into the dark side of Halloween, especially costumes. I know I am sounding like a prude, but I’ve never been a big fan of it. However — I do love a good creative costume. Well, as long as the word “sexy” isn’t affixed to it.

Okay, I am really sounding like a prude.

With that all said — that’s my relationship with Halloween. It’s a strange relationship. We get a long. We’re cordial. But, in the long run it’s really the day before Christmas music becomes acceptable to listen to in public places (besides Walmart — that was July 1st).

And, Christmas is what I live for — Santa, Baby Jesus and all.

Oh, and lots of Bing Crosby as well.


TOMORROW’S RACE: THE HAUNTED HALF

I am pretty stoked about The Haunted Half in Provo tomorrow morning. I am going to be sweeping the course like I did last week in Salt Lake. This go around I am sweeping with my good friend — Tim Gill.

Needless to say — I am as giddy as a schoolgirl. This is the third time I’ve swept alongside with Tim and it’s always a party. In fact most of my sweeping techniques I use — I’ve learned from Tim. He’s a great motivator, runner and person.

Oh, and he’s all kinds of funny.

I am not sure exactly what I am going to dress up as this week. I might do the Sweeper again, but honestly I want to mix it up some. Plus, running in coveralls gave me some major chaffage. TMI? (only if you’re not a runner)

So stay tuned on Saturday for my costume. I will promise you this — it will be epic.
