These are a few of my favorite (running) things …

I’m a very social runner. That’s kind of an understatement to say the least. I love running with people, I love talking to people and I love hearing people’s reasons to run. It’s seriously a side hobby to my actual hobby of running. I really can’t complain.

But, there are times (like this past Saturday) that I’m not around that many people. During my last 5-6 miles I was pretty much the only other runner except for one that paced with me for about half a mile. It can get fairly lonely out on the road all alone. Not my cup of tea.

Under normal circumstances I would just plug in my music and zone out. But, I really couldn’t do that. For one my hands were numb and using my touch screen would be nearly impossible and then secondly it was still raining and it probably wouldn’t be the best idea to wear my headphones in the rain.

So, I ran in silence.

Well, not complete silence. I talked a lot to myself. I gave myself a couple motivational speeches, I prayed a lot, denounced running at least twice and sang songs. I sang a couple songs about burritos, frozen yogurt and the rain that occupied my time. Oh, I sang songs about horses and my wet shoes as well. I sang so much I probably could release my own album full of my original songs.

But, one song I started singing to myself in the middle of misery actually quite amused me so I decided to write it down and share it here on my blog. The rain was too much, I was in pain, my hands were stiffer than a mannequins and did I mention that I wanted to die and denounce my love for running?

Then I started ad libbing my own rendition of the Sound of Music’s “These are a few of my favorite things” and this is what I kind of came up with … it’s not the best … but it made me smile in the moment I needed it the most …

These are a few of my favorite (running) things …

Raindrops on noses and a bag full of Skittles.
Bright yellow Hokas and warm woolen mittens
Caffeine infused Gu that gives me wings.
These are a few of my favorite things

When my legs cramps
When my knees sting.
When I’m feeling sore.
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

Cream colored race bibs and the whole kit and caboodle.
Race shirts and free swag and carb-loading noodles.
Moments of joy that make me do nothing but sing.
These are a few of my favorite things

When my legs cramps
When my knees sting.
When I’m feeling sore.
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

Runners in spandex designed with blue dashes.
Eagerness to run excites the masses.
Silver white winters that melt into springs.
These are a few of my favorite things.

When my legs cramps
When my knees sting.
When I’m feeling sore.
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

After singing this and laughing to myself it did help … foooooor … about 10 minutes. Then I kind of went back to cursing my run and circumstance for another two miles until I was rescued by Sonja and Becky.

Another few of my favorite things about running.
